By De’Vonna Pittman, Founder & CEO of Nature’s Syrup Beauty

For generations, textured and curly-haired people have been handed down advice about growing and caring for our crowns. Some of it came from our grandmother’s kitchens, some from stylists, and some from big beauty brands with loud promises. But here’s the thing: not everything we’ve been told is true.

As a kitchen scientist turned beauty CEO, I’ve spent years separating fact from fiction in hair care. And today, I want to break down some of the biggest myths about hair growth, because the truth is both simple and empowering.

Myth #1: Cutting Your Hair Makes It Grow Faster

The Truth: Hair growth happens at the follicle, beneath the scalp, not at the ends. Trimming doesn’t speed up growth, but it does prevent split ends from traveling up the strand and causing breakage. In other words: trims help you retain the growth you already have.

Myth #2: Grease Alone Keeps Hair Healthy

The Truth: Petroleum-based grease coats the hair but doesn’t actually moisturize it. Textured hair needs water + water-based products to hydrate, then oils and butters to seal that moisture in. That’s why routines built around layering hydration and sealants are key for length retention.

Myth #3: Protective Styles Automatically Lead to Growth

The Truth: Protective styles like braids, wigs, and weaves can help reduce manipulation, but they don’t magically make hair grow. In fact, if your scalp isn’t clean and nourished, or if the style is too tight, it can do more harm than good. The real growth comes from how you treat your hair before, during, and after the style.

Myth #4: Textured Hair Doesn’t Grow as Fast as Straight Hair

The Truth: On average, all hair types grow about half an inch per month. What makes textured hair seem like it grows slower is its curl pattern. Each bend in the strand is a fragile point where breakage can happen. With consistent moisture, strengthening, and gentle care, textured hair can grow long and thrive.

Myth #5: One Miracle Product Will Solve It All

The Truth: No single product can undo years of damage or replace a consistent routine. Healthy hair growth is holistic: it requires scalp care, hydration, strengthening, and patience. That’s why I developed plant-powered systems instead of quick-fix formulas, because real growth is about lifestyle, not shortcuts.

The Kitchen Scientist’s Advice

When I first started experimenting in my kitchen, I wasn’t chasing hype, I was searching for solutions. What I learned is that science and culture have to work together: knowledge about how hair really grows, paired with products that honor our textures.

If you want to grow and retain your hair, here are the three non-negotiables:

Scalp health → cleanse, stimulate, and nourish.

Moisture balance → hydrate, then seal.

Gentle handling → protect, don’t neglect.

That’s the recipe for growth. No myths, no gimmicks, just truth.
